Michaela Murphy Purnell

As foreign legal adviser in Mexico since 1991, MICHAELA MURPHY PURNELL focuses her practice on preventing disputes in commercial transactions. When a dispute does arise, she assists the parties as mediator or arbitrator in resolving their dispute in accordance with their dispute resolution agreement. As an Associate of the Centro Interdisciplinario para el Manejo de Conflictos A.C., she relies on her experience in transnational business to understand the parties’ interests and expectations in resolving their dispute.

Her studies include: Diplomada in International Commercial Arbitration, International Chamber of Commerce-Mexico/ Escuela Libre de Derecho; J.D., The University of Texas at Austin School of Law; A.B. with Honors in Language and Area Studies, Davidson Collage; and research and studies in Europe: Institute of European Studies, Madrid, Spain; Université Paul Valery, Faculté de Lettres, Montpellier, France.

Admitted to the State Bar of Texas, she is a member of its sections on the International Law and Dispute Resolution. She is trained as an arbitrator and a mediator by the CENTRO DE ARBITRAJE DE MÉXICO (CAM)/ INTER-AMERICAN DEVELOPMENT BANK, the CENTRO DE MEDICACIÓN Y ARBITRAJE OF THE CÁMARA NACIONAL DE COMERCIO (CANACO), and ICC-MÉXICO, among others. She is a Member of the Advisory Board of the Institute for Transnational Arbitration, which promotes arbitration as a means of resolving transnational and international disputes.

She a is Member of U.S.-Mexico Bar Association, which offers continuing legal education for lawyers of both countries, primarily on cross-border issues. She is an author, editor, exhibitor, and translator on transnational dispute resolution and comparative law issues.
